REGIONAL COVERAGE & DATA QUALITY

Good routes start
with honest data.

Surface API includes the United States and selected international regions. Check the roads that matter to your application, and keep mapped surfaces separate from estimates.

Coverage review: 14 September 2026

A refreshed dataset is in preparation.

The current service remains on its existing data while new imports are validated. Source dates and surface-tag availability vary by region. New imports are not automatically live.

Where to start your evaluation

These are regional availability notes, not a guarantee that every road or surface has been mapped.

The review used targeted geographic samples and import metadata. It was not an exhaustive audit of every road.

Priority additions

The Canary Islands, Puerto Rico, Morocco, Ecuador, and Guadeloupe are in the current import and validation programme. Treat them as planned additions until a release is confirmed. A US refresh is also planned.

Three different questions to ask

Is the road present?

A source can include a region while individual roads are missing or too far from your supplied coordinates to match.

Is the surface tagged?

An explicit OpenStreetMap surface tag is different from a value inferred using road type. Use surface_tagged to keep that distinction visible.

Is it suitable for this route?

Check representative courses, parallel roads, crossings, and gaps. Road-surface data is not a live report of conditions or access restrictions.
